NERD is the first hip hop bar band -- and if they accomplish nothing more than that, we love them dearly for it! Two albums into their career (or three, if you count the alternate versions of the debut), we still don't know what NERD's really trying to accomplish -- but it's starting to look like they don't either, and maybe that's why their records are such great fun. You'd think that a couple of cats who've made their name as the most in-demand electro studio wizards in the world would have something serious to say with their actual band (live drums, organ, bass and guitar are out front on most tracks) -- and they do indeed have a few tracks with some almost alarmingly serious subject matter. But there are also stretches in which Pharell seems to be making the lyrics up as he goes along, and makes with the sexual braggadocio and the spaceship-sized asses he wants to take a ride on. The Neptunes don't have to be the Neptunes all the time -- NERD's all about catchy-as-hell, funky synth rock. If they weren't millionaires you'd want to hire them for your backyard throwdown. Take that or leave it. |
