Seven years since they reunited for The Resurrection, Scarface, Bushwick Bill and Willy D. are back with a continuation of the hardcore, gritty and often gruesome gangsta rap they became famous for in the early 90’s. Interestingly, the Geto Boys that first formed on Rap-A-Lot Records in Houston back in 1986, did not include the above three which have since gained both themselves and Rap-A-Lot Records legendary status. Originally consisting of Prince Johnny C., the Slim Jukebox, and DJ Reddy Red, decisions by Johnny C and Jukebox to leave the group between ’87 and ’88 opened the door for then dancer turned rapper Bushwick Bill, along with solo acts Scarface, and Willie D. The group’s debut album Grip It! On That Other Level was denied distribution by Geffen because of lyrics about necrophilia and murder on the single “Mind of a Lunatic.” Luckily Rick Rubin had the group’s back and found the album distribution through Giant. The Geto Boys platinum selling sophomore LP We Can’t Be Stopped continued with the group’s vivid depictions of everything disturbing. The album cover in itself was shocking and featured a picture of Willie D. and Scarface wheeling Bushwick Bill into an emergency room after he threatened his girlfriend into shooting him point-blank in the eye, in a botched attempt to have his mom collect his life insurance money. With various solo projects taking precedent for the trio in the years to come, it wasn’t until The Resurrection in ‘96, that the infamous trio recorded together again. Led by the single “Yes, Yes, Y’all,” the return of Scarface, Bushwick Bill, and Willie D., on The Foundation, is a much appreciated reunion and testament to what’s really gangsta in 2005. |
