I started my overview on this album yesterday with something like "this is not your usual Shadow album", saying that I'm gonna write a full review soon. To what my friend and ridiculously radical (?! yeah!) Shadow fan Patrick immediately responded: "I'm looking forward to it!"
Are you really? I've never been that kinda Shadow follower, I respect him for his productions, his DJ skills, his affection for music and vinyl and his talent to hook the world up with something that was very necessary to come: instrumental HipHop music deeply soaked in any kind of musical tradition. That's what he did, that's when he open up the eyes of so many listeners in the world. Taking it from there, nothing much interesting happened, except music and that's the most interesting thing. "Outsider" is an outsider album, because it knocks instrumental escapade listeners off as well as those listeners who'd like to just go more or less in one direction. Outsider is HipHop, is Blues, is Rock, is Hyphy, is instrumental music, is sampling music, is music played with electronical devices etc. - you diggin it?
I've never been a fan of too diverse albums, which happens here too. Some of it is really dope (like 3 Freaks, Backstage Girl), some of it is cheesy (this time), some is uninteresting (artifact), some is not my cup of tea (keep em close)..
anyway, let my friend Patrick explain it:
"See there are artists which like a certain sound or type of production
or an image and there are some which simply like/love music. The same
goes for music critics, music 'lovers' and other consumers of the art
form. As soon as an artist dares to change his sound/image/production
style, two things happen: there are some people that can cope with it
and there are some that can't. Now as this is a review of a record which
is (very) different from his processors, I strongly suggest to ask
yourself: can I handle records like "Check Yo Head", "Stg. Peppers
Lonely Harts Club Band", "Electric Circus", "My Ghetto Report Card". If you feel positive towards the aforementioned records, changes,
new ideas and new experiences in general, I strongly suggest to give
this record a close listen and let us know what you think about it."
