In the aftermath of the Los Angeles LP, Flying Lotus cemented his reputation as a staple of new bass music, created official remixes for the likes of Stereolab and Radiohead, and became a regular fixture in 2008’s year end polls. Now, with LA EP 3 x 3, the third and final piece of the accompanying EP series, FlyLo and a few friends dig deeper into the psychedelic ambience and dreamlike elegance that have made a few appearances on past Lotus projects. Two new Flying Lotus compositions, “Endless White” and “Spin Cycle” display his deft touch and unrivaled eye for beauty. Breakage’s “Testament” turns Gonjasufi’s quiet desperation into a tribal battle cry. But it is perhaps the collaboration with harpist Rebekah Raff that is most striking, revisioning “Auntie’s Harp” into a swirling symphony of rolling arpeggios and piercing electronics. This final release of the strictly-limited 12” EP series contains artwork taken from the same sessions as LA EP 1 x 1 and 2 x 2, as well as the full length. The two previous LA EPs sold out immediately, so get your hands on the final installation before they’re full blown collectors items. |
