Stoned Circus continue to set the standard for the most bugged-out, killer psyche-funk nuggets , with this, possibly the toughest drum break of all time on this super funky version of the Beatles’ classic by Japanese drummer Jimmy Takeuchi, taken from one of his rarest and most sought after lp’s; ‘Drum, Drum, Drum’. Famous in Japan for doing covers of western hits delivered in his inimitable funky style, sometimes his versions can seem a bit weak in comparison to the originals, not the case here, a stunning rendition, this track is his finest moment by far. On the flip it’s another obscure offering by another cat named Jimmy, but this ones takes this 45 into double A side status, and coins a whole new genre – yes, forget dubstep, you heard it here first, the next big thing is ‘bagpipe-funk’! Taken from the obscure ‘Pipe Dreams’ album released on Polydor in 1976. Jimmy Pryde manages to achieve that rare task of making bagpipes sound listenable. Add a super funky drum break, tough bass line, and some tripped-out moogs and you’ve got a stone-cold club classic. Can’t think what to play at midnight next Hogmanay?? Here it is!! |
