Housed in a handmade 7inch record box (handmade in Oakland, CA,) is a limited-edition version of the Groove Merchant compilation. 20 Years ago the Groove Merchant record store opened for business on Haight Street in San Francisco.
The rare funk, soul and jazz emporium became a mecca for collectors, DJs, music fans and producers. It was also the birthplace for the Luv N'Haight and Ubiquity Record labels. To celebrate this anniversary, Groove Merchant Record store owner Chris Veltri collaborated with Luv N’Haight and has compiled a tasty selection of musical treats.
The set includes Ten (10) x 7” singles pressed exclusively for sale with the box. The line-up (below) features tracks from the CD/LP compilation, and a few Luv N’Haight favorites - including a re-press of the stupidly-rare Darondo “Legs part 1” b/w “Let My People Go” 7” (a $400+ single just by itself), and Mike James Kirklands “Hang On In There” (recently covered by John Legend and The Roots.) 10 sides equals 20 tracks - one for each year since the opening.
Other labels sell lesser quality boxes for more money, this box is built to last in the USA, designed by Freddy Anzures, of P-R-O-P-S /Apple (responsible for the Groove Merchant CD/LP packaging.)
Box facts:
- Box will fit around 30 7”s singles.
- Handmade in Oakland, CA, at The Key Printing and Binding, using refurbished, salvaged, and vintage machinery. The board used in construction is the hardest available, from the last remaining stock.
- Reinforced lid prevents corner breakage. Removeable inner box acts as a buffer against breakage/ pressures.
- Cloth, both red and blue, used in covering lids is natural fiber linen, with acrylic coating, offset litho printed with durable TuffTex inks.
- Hardware from Ohio. Rivets, American made, are hi-strength tubular type, no POP rivets, staples or split rivets were used in construction.
