The Bamboos celebrate their 10th Anniversary, combining classic rawness and gorgeous newness on one covetable 7". Bringing classic Bamboos magic back-to-back with a current and previously unreleased cut, this 7" shows just why The Bamboos are revered the World over and gain more and more fans with each release, from the deep funk and soul faithful to an ever-widening crowd of music lovers. Over to bandleader Lance Ferguson (aka solo act Lanu) for a trip down memory lane, and what this landmark means to him. "It was 2001 when we independently released our first 7" vinyl single "Eel Oil"/"Blackfoot". I pressed up 500 copies and luckily I was able to sell them all out of my spare bedroom in a few weeks, to stores around the World like Soul Brother, Dusty Groove and DMR. A band making raw Funk music from Australia!?? At the time I guess it seemed pretty unusual. I was drawn to the underground funk/soul scene at the time not only by the music but also by the whole DIY punk-rock aesthetic of it. It felt like we could be a part of it ... contribute to it. It was people like Keb Darge, Snowboy, Kenny Dope, Quantic, Jason Stirland, Ennio Styles, and Adrian Gibson who really got behind us at the very start. Now, ten years later and after nearly five albums on Tru Thoughts (new LP soon-come), it is a really cool thing for me to see this 10th Anniversary edition of The Bamboos' first single get released. It's wild to hear the original 4-piece instrumental Hammond/guitar sound up against one of our latest recordings: a full string/horn section version of James Blake's "The Wilhelm Scream" featuring Oz pop star Megan Washington. The music a band plays needs to keep changing up all the time or things get old real quick. Scenes come and go but The Bamboos are here now because we have moved on. I'm always wanting to move on." |
