Paebiru is an obscure Brazilian psych concept album about the 'four elements' (earth, air, fire, water), lost in warehouse floods in Pernambuco in 1974, causing it to become a massively sought-after lost classic fetching up to $4000 for original vinyl copies. It is a free, psychedelic and atmospheric blend of sung and chanted vocals, classical acoustic and fuzz guitar, piano, organ, flute, sax and a range of percussion, reigned in enough to keep it tense and exciting - perfect for two of the UK?s most rapidly rising electronic producers to get stuck into:
Described as "one of the most special and unique artists to come out of the UK" by Hyperdub first lady Ikonika, Manchester's Illum Sphere has had a busy time since his debut 'The Incoming EP' landed in 2009 on hometown label, Fat City. Winning the BBC 1xtra Urban Music Award, invitations to play at LA institution Low End Theory (the second English person to do so after Mary Anne Hobbs) and this year's Red Bull Music Academy in London, through to remix requests from Martyn, Zed Bias and Warp Records, he has already become one the UK?s most hotly tipped producers, whilst remaining outside the London hype machine. Add to that the gleaming praise given by all those that play his groundbreaking Hoya:Hoya night in Manchester, an EP on Martyn?s 3024 imprint, support from Radiohead front man Thom Yorke, Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and Brainfeeder?s Gaslamp Killer, Lorn, Ras G and Daedelus.
London based migrant Ross Tones makes music under the ever so pertinent moniker Throwing Snow. Drawing influences from a vast array of genres encompassing dubstep, UK funky, house and post-rock, his productions have a consistent comforting warmth and glistening coldness. Following his compelling d?but on Alex Nut's Ho_Tep in late 2010 he has since been in hot demand for remixes reworking tracks from the likes of Gold Panda, Kidkanevil and Greymatter. Radio support from Gilles Peterson and Benji B followed with guest appearances on Sinden's Kiss FM and Ministry of Sound. 2011 holds forthcoming remixes for Ninja Tune and Domino and releases on Raffertie's Super imprint and Social Sneaker Club. |
