Akoben is the second vinyl release from New Orleansʼ own full Afrobeat orchestra, Kumasi. Thirteen members strong, Kumasi has been keeping crowds dancing in the clubs, festivals, and crawfish boils of New Orleans for several years now. Kumasi plays original compositions heavily influenced by the musical style created in Lagos by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen in the early 70s. While the first album, Togetherness, was entirely instrumental, Akoben is laced with call-and-response vocal performances. A perfect record for the dance floor that also sparks conversations about the current political climate in the US and beyond. Limited to 400 copies. |
