Earlier this year, Kenny Smith was inducted into the Cincinnati’s Hall of Fame. “People always talk about Motown and Detroit,” Smith said at the time, “but we had King Records. We started it all.” King Records, the original home to James Brown, may seem like a lot to live up to, but if anyone can do it, it’s probably this unheralded soul legend. The uptempo “Here Comes The Law” is one of rarest and funkiest of Smith’s sides, originally issued in 1975 on the Lena label, and will undoubtedly catch the ears of the same Northern Soul fans who made his “Lord, What’s Happened” a classic in the UK. It’s a shame that Lena (named after Smith’s wife) never got around to releasing our B-side, the uncategorizable and amazing “Foxfire,” but with this single Dopebrother has made up for the oversight. With a whip-crack open drum break, rumbling bass line, sophisticated strings and sexy female backing vocals, this previously unreleased gem will appeal to everyone from the disco heads to the funk fiends. Dopebrother is proud to be working closely with Mr. Smith to bring you these ultra-rare treats
