Waajeed returns under the Platinum Pied Pipers guise on the Ubiquity label with three new tracks. Here he uncovers two female singers - Tiombe Lockhart and Georgia - who I hadn't heard of before, but I get the impression we'll be hearing a lot more from (stop press - Gilles Peterson has just played a solo demo track from Tiombe) to supply the vocals to his Detroit soul beats. The vocals remind me of Jill Scott at her sweetest while the backing tracks vary from grimy headbangers (Stay With Me) to light rhodes tinkling (I Got You) to more uptempo off kilter heavyweight numbers (Your Day Is Done). A killer EP with three great tracks from a couple of major new talents. Detroit does it again. |
